Okay I've got a question... what's one method of marketing or promotion you use, that isn't often recommended? i.e. creative / out-of-the-box thinking.
The main one for me is going to craft markets. Here in Auckland, NZ, we have a LOT of markets for handmade crafts. Obviously my books aren't all handmade(!), but they usually let me in because the author/illustrator/printer is NZ-based. In addition to sales, I've been able to build relationships with readers in person, and get sign-ups for my mailing list. I do between 2-4 markets a month, and up this leading to Christmas. I usually make a healthy monthly profit. Nothing to write home about, but fairly reliable.

Teaching. I taught a two Saturday college course on "Writing Speculative Fiction" this summer, and nearly all of the students bought at least one of my books. I'm hoping to add more workshops and courses like this in my future.

I'm hoping to add more workshops and courses like this in my future. That is good. And you're giving back to them in the process. They'd also have a finer appreciation of your work. And if they're interested in writing spec fic they're probably reading spec fic as well. So many plusses. I do lots of school visits / teaching but generally only sell one set of books to the school library. Perhaps I need to look into doing workshops for adults as well. I'll add it to my next-year-maybe list! Do you run these workshops in libraries, or at a private venue?
